Missing Left Sock Beast [userpic]

Dear Members and Friends of the UU Legislative Ministry,

Today will be an historic day. AB 19, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protections Act, will go to the CA Assembly floor for a vote. The session starts at 11AM, and the bill is likely to be heard in the afternoon. We need 41 yes votes for it to pass.

Civil rights organizations such as the NAACP & Mexican America Legal Defense Fund have joined this historic coalition, standing for human rights and equality before the law. Faith communities and clergy from a variety of religious traditions have spoken on behalf of religious freedom and the right of conscience, recognizing that the state may not require religious groups to officiate at, or bless, same-gender marriages. By the same token, a denial of civil recognition dishonors the religious convictions of those communities and clergy who do officiate at, and bless, same-gender marriages.

Through it all, same gender couples have simply asked for the opportunity to protect their relationships and their children. Equal access to marriage brings the opportunity to form a legally and socially recognized family.

Thanks to all who have helped to move this historic legislation forward.

You can find a copy of our letter on behalf of AB19 at http://www.uulmca.org/programs/me.html

May our legislators find the fortitude to show respect for our California constitution, for the separation of church and state, and for loving, law-abiding families. May they stand on the right side of history. May they stand on the side of love.

Feeling:: hopefulhopeful

Any idea how many votes this thing has going for it and how many it could reasonably garner?

Unfortunately, no, I don't; I'm living in Nevada now and am out of touch with CA politics.
